Chris Kee – Impacts of Social Networking
A lot of this article was a little over my head when trying to really take in every line and word. So after i tried reading it i went back and scanned through it and that seemed to work a little better for me because i already had an idea of what the article was about, and then could go back to key elements that stood out to me and try and make a little more sense of them.
Its odd how far social networking has come and how it has changed so many aspects when considering building a website. Like in the article where it was talking about the different leadership styles that have come and gone since the 80’s. Even though when students, or anyone may build a site, i know that the first thing that comes to me isnt social networking and how i can implement that into my site. But as we continue into the future, you begin to see that it is becoming more and more necessary that you do think about that, and you do consider how your information can be shared, or viewed by multiple users, and how they percieve it and how they can share your information, by networking with other people.
I also thought the flowcharts the article had about the different ways a business is set up in terms of hierachy, was interesting beacuse you really beign to see how CEO’s and all the workers in a business are really coming together more in a sense. If everyone only answered to one person, then no new viewpoints would come into play, and therefore no new changes can be thought up. But by allowing everyone to communicate ideas and talk to one another it really gives a business the oppurtunity to create ideas and grow. And for a business to take the step and really allow that, is a very good thing, and im glad that we are seeing more and more of that now. A business needs social networking in the workplace as they do online through the web. Both of these types of communication are essential in growing with todays rapid expansion and new ideas and technology.
All these changes in businesses open new ways that corporations will communicate, new visions inside these corporations, new and powerful organizations will sprout inside these corporations, new intelligence and input will lead to more innovative ideas, and then soon this concept of what social networking is and does for a business, will be a key factor in detwrmining employee excellence. Then in the end, might end up putting the company at an increased revenue, which is always a win!

I liked your comment about the “Leadership Styles” chart in the whitepaper. I didn’t write about it in my post, but now that you mention it, it was an important point. Even though social networking is pretty much in its infancy, its quickly becoming very influential in business, and will no doubt have an even more dramatic effect in the coming years. It seems like companies need to jump on board and figure this social networking stuff out, or they will be left behind.
I agree with you that the need is definitely growing to find ways to legitimately incorporate social networking into the sites we will build. Open communication is a great thing. I think that everyone benefits when they share ideas and knowledge.
It is incredible to see how the work relationships for companies have changed, I liked that part as well. Just the fact that the boss can really talk to their employees and get their opinions and input is fantastic. I see that barriers are no longer what they used to be, where most people don’t even know who they work with, much less who they work for. Although I am a bit skeptical, I think that networking is an important part of where we are going, I just hope it doesn’t become as bad as cell phones and you tube, and TV car commercials at the movies.
Nice response to the article. Your not alone. Th article was over my head as well the first time through. When I was reading about the hierarchy I personally had a hard time understanding the good things about it when it comes to business. I think the chain of command type hierarchy is the way to go, that way lines dont get crossed and information doesnt get overlooked.
