Response to Video – Chris Kee
-Know your Goals
-Prepare your strategy
-Cannot Afford to Experiment
Obama knew his goals from the start, and therefore he knew what he had to build a strategy around in order to “win”. He did not have to think of different ideas and experiment with them, because he knew what he had to do based off of his goals. Like when you are running any business, or building any site for any business, you have to think about your goals and objectives and be decisive on what exactly you can affordo to do in order to achieve your goals that you have set. Also, when deciding on goals, be specific, and dont include everything about everything. Do what you can afford to in time.
In Obamas campaign he had ONE goal, to become president of the United States. Everything else in his life didnt matter, so he was able to organize what he did, and base how to achieve them off of that ONE goal. Obama realized that it wasnt about him. When you run a business or create a site, it is NOT about YOU, its about the CONSUMER. Obama realized that and it made him more effective when considering the whole, which was “WE”. Therefore his key selling proposition was “Change WE can believe in.”
One strategy he used was to integrate the internet into everything he did. Another strategy he used was more specific into the first strategy. He became grassroots. He thought about the consumers level, about how specifically you can help the individual. And the last strategy was to create and maintain connections, big and small.
By using all of these aspects, Obama was able to pull ahead in the campaign and apeal to everyone by integrating the internet and social networking with every individual in everything he did, constantly. Thats what he thought about when running, and he executed those strategies to achieve his ONE goal, which was to become President, and he did just that.

Going to the people was the idea, and they accomplished this goal completely. They used every asset available to them and really targeted individuals. I know there are billions of people in the world, but the integration of marketing and internet strategies were spot on. And as you said, in business it all comes down to how you can help the individual.
I liked that you pointed out the idea of having a singular goal to work off of. One problem that I think I have as a designer is that I have about one thousand goals going on at once, therefore I don’t have a single unifying goal to steer me in the right direction. It seems like this is a very important thing to do, because it will help you prioritize all the tasks that need to get done. In this way, maybe I won’t be president of the U.S., but maybe I can be a good designer
I definitely think that it is easier to achieve your goals when you just have one. So many times businesses don’t work because there are too many people working towards too many different goals. (Too many chiefs and not enough Indians) I had some friends that wanted to start up a theatre company, but they all had different ideas of what they wanted to do and how they wanted to do it. Sadly, it never got passed the planning stage, because they couldn’t all agree on common goals.
Focusing a core set of goals around the consumer is the main thing I got from the video. The whole ‘grassroots’ idea seems to be something that people starting new businesses need to spend more time on. Its a pretty simple strategy to pull off, and will produce some good results. I never quite know what to type in these comments.
Hey, I do believe that Obama won this election based on his strategy with the media and the internet. His name was everywhere all throughout the run for president, far more than McCain. Everywhere you turned to on the internet and TV you could see Obama’s face. Now as far as going down to the grassroots, I feel McCain tried really hard to make this his prime goal in his campaign. To the point that in the later half of the run he could not stop talking about Joe the Plummer.
Anyway, good response… And sorry for the rant… ha
Just passing by.Btw, your website have great content!
